They were very easy to assemble right from the box - you must attach each "lamp head" to a plastic tube, and each plastic tube comes with a stake inside of it that you take out and flip around so they attach at the bottom. The stake was able to penetrate the ground pretty easily once I found a spot with the right density of soil. I had no problem with them breaking. I recommend that if it doesn't go in easily then don't force it.I left them on a very bright and sunny spot for a couple of days just to be sure. At first I didn't know if they were working correctly because when you point them directly at the light there was a very faint red light, but I think this just shows they are charging.I was worried that they were only one color and not very bright BUT one part I did not do during assembly is take off the top lid with the solar panel and electric components, there is a paper tab you must remove that allows the battery to make full connection, you see this with a lot of other battery powered lights you see in toys, etc. After that the light started working right away, changing colors as expected, and was fairly bright. It is not the brightest light, especially compared to something that is hard wired, but they are very visible for a walkway outside at night and very good for something that is battery charged from solar power. I recommend doing what I did, keep the paper tab in to charge the battery for a couple of days in full sun, and then take the tab out before putting them in the final location.All 12 of mine worked with no problem, and the light actually has some other neat colors, it doesn't only do red green and blue as pictured, but also does orange, white, purple, etc.
